“BRAINWARP: THE BABY EATER”
A PODCAST IN 6 CHAPTERS!
ERIC HOFFMAN INTERVIEW:
November 14 sees the premiere of Eric Von Hoffman’s “Brainwarp the
Baby Eater” – a six episode podcast mini-series distributed through
Feral Audio (and available on iTunes). It’s the latest project from
Eric Hoffman, the Mr. Show writer and co-author of Comedy By The
Numbers, the McSweeney’s humor bible.
-What kind of podcast will the Brainwarp the Baby Eater show be? It’s
a six episode mini-series?
ERIC: Yes. First let me just assure everyone that this is not just a
show filled with baby eating jokes. It’s a character piece. It’s this
weird story about a stupid, inappropriate super-villain. A Drugstore
Cowboy level of super-villain. His lair is a shitty studio apartment.
In the series there’s romance and double-crosses and action scenes and
music and curse words and super-powered awkwardness.
-Who else appears on the show?
ERIC: Some amazingly talented and nice people. Matt Walsh returns to
the Brainwarp world he helped create with his classic character Capt.
Lunatic. We have music by the great David Adler. Also incredibly lucky
to have Bob Odenkirk, Morgan Walsh, Gillian Vigman, Bill Chott, Scot
Robinson, Mike Monterastelli, Joe Nunez, Neil Barton, and Ken Manthey
as the Junkie Landlord. And many surprises.
-And you mentioned music?
ERIC: We have two musical guests per episode. For our premiere show
we’re enormously excited to have Liam Lynch and the band Family. We’ll
also have new artwork for every episode. Check the Feral Audio site
for that.
-What’s the plot?
ERIC: Brainwarp the baby eater – who is sort of a mutated Dick Tracy
villain – goes on a ridiculous crime spree, and then crime-fighters
from various genres go after him. There’s a ‘70s cop, a superhero, a
pulp detective, and others. I loved doing this mash up of all these
different genre worlds.
-So is Brainwarp a cannibal? A zombie?
ERIC: Well one of the other curses Brainwarp must endure, besides his
asshole sense of fashion, is that he can’t quite remember his own
Secret Origin. Which is a big deal for any proper super-villain
because they like to flashback their story when they’re about to kill
a superhero. You know, “THAT is what brought us to this point,
Aquaman! Now that you’ve heard my long story, I can finally behead
you!”
-Meantime Aquaman has wriggled out of his bonds.
ERIC: If I know Aquaman, yes.
-Brainwarp seems to know the latest superhero gossip.
ERIC: Yeah he’s had run-ins with all the biggies, and he’s not afraid
to yap about it.
-When did this character originate?
ERIC: In high school. I made some super 8 films. Then there were some
stage shows in Chicago and in LA. And there have been self-published
comic books over the years.
-How did this podcast come together?
ERIC: I’d been wanting to do a podcast. Also, I have been trying to
record a definitive version of these characters for several years now.
It seemed like the right time. Dustin Marshall at Feral Audio has been
amazing in helping to make this happen. Without him there wouldn’t be
a show. And Shad Petosky and the fine people at PUNY Studios have been
great, as well.
-I saw somewhere there was a dvd version of Brainwarp?
ERIC: Not really. I mean, it’s not my vision, and I receive no money
from it. Everything’s cool now, but to be crystal clear: this podcast
uses material and characters that were generated well before the dvd.
We’re not using anything the dvd folks brought to the table.
-Good to know.
ERIC: It’s unfortunate it’s out there, but what are ya gonna do?
-Given the character’s history, is there a lot of material to draw from?
ERIC: Oh yeah. The show is mostly new stuff, though. Over the years,
some of the funniest people alive have been involved with Brainwarp.
But this telling of the story is all new. The characters have never
been presented in this manner before.
